How to check and install updates on CentOS

Installing updates for software packages or the kernel itself is highly recommended to your system up to date with the latest security updates or patches.

With your preferred SSH terminal login and run the following commands:

yum check-update

Yum check-update will check if there are any new CentOS updates.

To install an update you can run the following command replacing package_name with the specific package you want to update.

yum update package_name

To update everything at once you can run the following command.

yum update

Be very careful when using yum update, if you are not sure of what you are doing it is best to update one package at a time., that way you will know what caused the problem and it will be easier to fix.
